How Student Loan Repayments Work

Student loan repayments in the UK are taken automatically from your salary through PAYE once you earn above the repayment threshold for your plan type. The repayment is a percentage of your earnings above the threshold, not of your total salary.

The Repayment Formula

(Salary - Threshold) x Rate = Annual Repayment

For example, on Plan 2 with a £35,000 salary: (£35,000 - £27,295) x 9% = £693.45 per year, or £57.79 per month.

Which plan am I on?

Plan 1: You started your course before 1 September 2012 (England/Wales) or any time in Northern Ireland. Threshold: £24,990.

Plan 2: You started your course on or after 1 September 2012 in England or Wales. Threshold: £27,295.

Plan 4: You attended a Scottish university at any point. Threshold: £31,395.

Plan 5: You started your course on or after 1 August 2023 in England. Threshold: £25,000.

Postgraduate Loan: You took out a postgraduate master's or doctoral loan. Threshold: £21,000 at 6% (not 9%).

When is my loan written off?

Plan 1: 25 years after the April you were first due to repay. Plan 2: 30 years. Plan 4: 30 years or when you turn 65 (whichever comes first). Plan 5: 40 years. Postgraduate: 30 years. The write-off is automatic and does not count as income for tax purposes.

Does my student loan affect my credit score?

No. Student loan balances do not appear on your credit file and repayments are not reported to credit agencies. However, the repayment does reduce your take-home pay, which mortgage lenders will factor into affordability assessments.

Student Loan FAQs

When do I start repaying my student loan?
You start repaying your student loan in the April after you graduate or leave your course, but only if your income exceeds the repayment threshold for your plan type. For 2026/27, the thresholds range from £21,000 (Postgraduate) to £31,395 (Plan 4 Scotland).
What is the difference between Plan 1 and Plan 2 student loans?
Plan 1 covers students who started before September 2012 in England/Wales, or any time in Northern Ireland. Plan 2 covers those who started from September 2012 in England/Wales. Plan 2 has a higher repayment threshold (£27,295 vs £24,990) and the loan is written off after 30 years instead of 25 years.
How much of my salary goes to student loan repayments?
For Plan 1, 2, 4, and 5 loans, you repay 9% of everything you earn above the repayment threshold. For Postgraduate loans, the rate is 6% above the threshold. These repayments are deducted from your salary automatically through PAYE.
When is my student loan written off?
Plan 1 loans are written off 25 years after the April you were first due to repay. Plan 2 loans are written off after 30 years. Plan 4 (Scotland) loans are written off 30 years after the April you were first due to repay, or when you turn 65. Plan 5 loans are written off 40 years after the April you were first due to repay.
Can I repay my student loan early?
Yes, you can make voluntary overpayments at any time through the Student Loans Company (SLC) website. There are no penalties for early repayment. However, for many borrowers, the loan will be written off before it is fully repaid, so early repayment may not always be the best financial decision.
